The one rule that matters
Every slot keeps a percentage of everything bet on it β the house take. Your expected cost is always take Γ total dollars you spin through, and no machine is ever "due": every spin is independent. So the whole game is picking the machine with the smallest take, at the biggest denomination you can afford. Denomination is destiny: the same casino keeps roughly 3β5% on a $5 machine and 10β12% on a penny machine. Stick with one good machine β hopping changes nothing about your odds, it just drifts you toward higher-take machines.

Citywide average β 9.6% (Sept 2026: $177.9M kept on $1.856B wagered). The spread between the "tightest" and "loosest" casino in town is only 1.2 points β the machine and denomination you choose matter far more than which casino you walk into.

Where in Vegas: the locals casinos (South Point, Red Rock, Green Valley Ranch, the Stations and Boyd properties) are famously looser than the Strip β same machines, set to keep less. Downtown (Fremont Street) generally beats the Strip too. On the Strip itself, play the High Limit classics and skip the penny banks near the walkways.
Per-machine figures above are typical configured ranges. Nevada publishes slot hold by area and denomination, not by casino β the official area figures are below.

| Area | Slot hold | Expected ROI |

| Las Vegas Strip | 7.22% | β7.2% |

| Multi-denomination (most of the floor) | 7.08% |
| 5Β’ | 7.35% |
| $5 | 7.46% |
| 1Β’ | 9.72% |
| 25Β’ | 11.20% |
Single-month denomination figures are noisy in thin categories (the 25Β’ number comes from only 634 Strip machines). The stable 12-month pattern statewide: pennies β8.9% > multi-denomination β7.0% > $1 β6.3% > $5 β4.4%. Bigger denominations cost less β same rule as Atlantic City.

Florida specifics: the big floors are the Seminole Hard Rocks (Tampa and Hollywood) β tribal casinos, which do not publish their slot hold (their gaming compact only sets an 85% minimum average payout floor, not a disclosed figure), so the ranges above are the typical settings for each class. The state-licensed racinos do report β and they run looser than Atlantic City: 6.53% statewide hold in August 2026. Same rule as everywhere: $5 classics in High Limit are the cheapest seats in the state.
